Aquino, Benigno ‘Ninoy’ (b. 1932, d. 21 Aug. 1983). Filipino opposition leader Originally a journalist from a well-connected political family, he married Corazón M.
Aquino in 1954. Soon known as the ‘wonder boy’ of Filipino politics, he entered politics and became Mayor in 1955, Governor in 1961, and Senator in 1967. His meteoric rise was stopped by his imprisonment in 1972, when President
Marcos declared martial law. Despite being sentenced to death in 1977, he was allowed to leave for the USA in 1980 to undergo heart surgery. Though himself firmly committed to non-violence, he was assassinated on Marcos's orders immediately on his return to the Philippines.
