Amnesty International This international pressure group for the release of prisoners of conscience was founded by Peter Berenson in London on 28 May 1961. It has also been active against forms of punishment which it regards as inhumane, such as torture or capital punishment. It campaigns through the provision of legal aid and direct pressure, notably through publishing acts of injustice against individuals and through getting its members to protest to the governments concerned in letter-writing campaigns. It received the
Nobel Peace Prize for its work in 1977. By 2002, it had over one million members in over 140 states.
