Ahern, Bartholomew Patrick

Ahern, Bartholomew Patrick ( ‘Bertie’) (b. 12 Sept. 1951). Prime Minister of Ireland, 1997–  Born in Dublin, he studied in Dublin and at the London School of Economics and became an accountant. He entered the Dáil Éireann (parliament) in 1978, and in 1986 he became Lord Mayor of Dublin. He was the Minister of Finance from 1991, but following the resignation of Charles Haughey he lost the leadership contest of Fianna Fáil against Albert Reynolds. He succeeded Reynolds as leader of the party in 1994, and after his party's excellent performance in the 1997 elections he proceeded to form a minority government with the Progressive Democrats. He followed his predecessors in supporting the Northern Ireland peace process, and was one of the signatories of the Good Friday Agreement. He presided over an unprecedented economic boom, and in 2002 he became the first sitting Prime Minister in more than 30 years to be re-elected.
