Singapore was an important trading port between the 11th and 16th cents. In 1819 Sir Stamford
Raffles re‐established it as a counterweight to Dutch influence in the region and it became a crown colony in 1867. After the Second World War it remained separate from the Malay Union and was given its own constitution in 1955, which led to self‐government in 1959.
