Portland, battle of, 1653. Naval engagement in the first Anglo‐Dutch War, which developed into a running fight up the Channel from 18 to 20 February. A large fleet under
Blake encountered Martin Tromp's fleet off Portland Bill escorting a convoy. Tromp lost twelve warships but saved most of the convoy.
