Nehru, Jawaharlal (1889–1964). Independent India's first prime minister. The son of Motilal Nehru, a prominent lawyer and leader of the Indian National Congress, Nehru was educated at Harrow and Cambridge and trained for the bar. He became politically active during
Gandhi's first non‐cooperation movement (1920–2). In 1939 he was Gandhi's choice to displace fellow‐socialist S. C. Bose as Congress president. Nehru played a leading role in negotiations for independence in 1946–7 and was prime minister in India's first interim government. He was confirmed in office at three subsequent general elections.
