Magna Carta was sealed by King John on 15 June 1215 at Runnymede (Berks.). It followed a period of intense political and military activity after John's defeat at
Bouvines. Magna Carta was the product of long and hard negotiation. It was designed to be a negotiated peace, bridging the extreme rebels on the one hand, and John and his supporters on the other. But in this it was a total failure for John had no intention of adhering to Magna Carta, agreeing to it only to gain time. In September 1215 civil war began in earnest. The charter's achievement and significance lie elsewhere, for it laid down standards to be observed in the future by the crown, for the first time in written law establishing defined limitations to royal rights. With the reissues of 1216 and 1217, and the definitive version of 1225 (much briefer than the original), the charter became a statement of law.
