Kenya Former British protectorate and colony in eastern Africa. A British protectorate was declared in 1895. The development of the agricultural resources by white settlers was made possible by the administration's need to generate income and by the construction of the Uganda railway from 1897. The change in Britain's attitude towards colonial dependencies in the 1950s led to Kenyan independence under African rule in 1963.
