Dunkeld, battle of

Dunkeld, battle of, 1689. The death of their leader Dundee deprived the Jacobites of the advantage they had gained at Killiecrankie in July 1689. Mackay, leading the Williamite forces, was able to regroup. On 21 August, the Jacobites attacked a small force under William Cleland at Dunkeld. Though Cleland was killed, his men repulsed the attack with such vigour that the Jacobite force was routed.
