Davy, Sir Humphry (1778–1829). Cornish chemist and applied scientist. Davy's apprenticeship to an apothecary was interrupted when he was invited to Bristol to a clinic where oxygen and other gases were given to those with tuberculosis. He met S. T.
Coleridge, and with him discovered the properties of laughing gas. In 1801 he was appointed to the
Royal Institution in London, where his eloquence made his lectures fashionable. In 1815, his help was sought in controlling mine explosions; he came up with the lamp that bears his name. His lamp made him the obvious candidate to succeed Sir Joseph
Banks as president of the
Royal Society in 1820.
