Congreve, William (1670–1729). English poet and playwright. Educated at Kilkenny School and Trinity College, Dublin, Congreve quickly gave up law for literature. After
Incognita (1691) Congreve found his
métier in witty comedy, establishing his reputation with
The Old Batchelour (1693),
The Double Dealer (1693),
Love for Love (1695), and
The Way of the World (1700). Disappointed by the reception of this last play, Congreve gave up writing for the stage.
