Cenwulf (d. 821), king of Mercia (796–821). Cenwulf became king after the brief reign of Ecgfrith, son of the great
Offa, doubtless by a coup. He took over Offa's extensive authority in southern England. In 798 he repressed a revolt in Kent, brutally. His authority there was diminished by a bitter dispute with Archbishop Wulfred of Canterbury, appointed in 805.
