Brunei rose as a powerful Islamic sultanate in the 15th cent. In 1888, surrounded by the Brookes' Sarawak and the domains of the British North Borneo Company, it was taken under a British protectorate. The sultan was restored to his government and, in 1963, declined to join the
Malaysian Federation.
