Botswana Former British protectorate of Bechuanaland. British influence in the region was established by the
London Missionary Society and traders operating northward from Cape Colony in the early 19th cent. It was not until pressure from the Boers of the South African Republic (
Transvaal) to the east and the establishment of a German colony to the west threatened the region that the British government declared a protectorate in 1885. It became independent in 1966.
