Berkeley, George (1685–1753). Philosopher and bishop. One of the most renowned philosophers of his day, Berkeley was born in Kilkenny of English descent. He became a fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, but spent 1713–20 in London or on continental travel. In 1724 he was appointed dean of Derry but his main interest was in raising support for a college in Bermuda to preach the gospel and he was in America 1728–32. From 1734 he was bishop of Cloyne and spent almost all his later years in the diocese. His idealist philosophy, attacking the materialism of
Locke and
Newton, is to be found largely in
Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710) and
Three Dialogues (1713).
