Barbados An island in the eastern Caribbean some 200 miles north‐east of Trinidad. Extending 21 miles by 14, it is a little larger than the Isle of Wight. It was uninhabited in 1627 when settled by the English, who began growing sugar cane in the 1630s. The capital is Bridgetown and tourism is augmented by light industry.
