Marius ♂ Latin name occasionally used in English and other languages. It is of uncertain origin: it may be connected with Mars, the name of the god of war, or perhaps mas, maris ‘virile’. The Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese equivalent, Mario, is extremely popular, being taken as the masculine form of Maria and therefore associated with the cult of the Virgin Mary.
