Llewelyn
Llewelyn ♂ (Welsh) Traditional: altered form (influenced by
llew ‘lion’) of
Llywelyn, an ancient name of uncertain derivation. It probably goes back to the Old Celtic name
Lugobelinos, the first element of which is
Lugu- (the name of a god; see
Lleu); the second is a name-forming element found also in names such as
Cunobelinus (
Cymbeline). The name was borne by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (1173–1240) and his grandson Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (d. 1282), Welsh princes who for a time united their countrymen in North Wales and led opposition to the power of the Norman barons in South Wales and the Marches.
Also: Llewellyn, Llywel(l)yn.
