Jabez

Jabez ♂ Biblical name, meaning ‘sorrowful’ in Hebrew: ‘and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow’ (1 Chronicles 4:9). The name is thus metathesized from Hebrew ya'zeb. The name is now out of fashion, but it was popular among the Puritans in the 17th century, as the mention of Jabez in the Bible lent support to the Protestant work ethic. Jabez was ‘more honourable than his brethren’ he called on the Lord for protection and wealth: ‘Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me’ the Lord duly obliged.
