Elwyn ♂ (Irish) Of uncertain origin. In the modern Welsh name the influence of the word (g)wyn ‘white, fair; blessed, holy’ is apparent. However, this is also one of the forms used for the name of a 6th-century Irish saint; it may be no more than a variant of Alan.
