῾Ali ♂ (Arabic) ‘Sublime’; name of a cousin of the Prophet, who married his daughter Fāṭima and in 656 became the fourth rightly guided caliph. His sons Ḥasan and Ḥusayn are regarded by Shiites as Muḥammad's true successors.

Feminine form: ῾Aliyya.
