Adina ♀, ♂ Mainly Jewish: in the Bible a male name, derived from Hebrew adin ‘slender’. It is borne by a soldier in the army of King David, ‘Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a captain of the Reubenites’ (1 Chronicles 11:42). In modern times it was revived as a male name among Zionists, but is now more commonly a female name, no doubt because of the characteristically feminine -a ending.
