Watling Street (Roman road from Dover to Wroxeter). Wæclinga stræt late 9th cent. ‘Roman road associated with the family or followers of a man called *Wæcel’. OE pers. name + -inga- + strǣt. An early name for St Albans is Wæclingaceaster c.900, ‘Roman fort of *Wæcel's people’, and the road-name was no doubt applied to the stretch of road between St Albans and London before it was extended to the whole length. The name Watling Street was later transferred to several other Roman roads.
