tam- ‘dark’ or rather from a pre-Celtic root *
tā- ‘melt, flow turbidly’. The river-names
Tame (three examples, N. Yorks., Warwicks.–Staffs., Lancs.–Ches.),
Team (Durham),
Teme (Shrops.–Worcs.–Herefs.),
Thame (Bucks.–Oxon.), and (with a different ending)
Tamar (Cornwall–Devon) are from the same root and probably have a similar meaning.
