Shotley, possibly ‘woodland clearing frequented by pigeons, or where shooting takes place, or on a steep slope’, OE *sceote or sceot or *scēot + lēah: Shotley Northum. Schotley 1242. Shotley Suffolk Scoteleia 1086 (DB). Shotley Bridge Durham, Shotleybrigg 1613, is named from Shotley Northum., with reference to the important bridge here over the River Derwent spanning the two counties of Northumberland and Durham.
