Haydon, usually ‘hill or Down where hay is made’, OE hēg + dūn: Haydon Dorset. Heydone 1163. Haydon Wick Swindn. Haydon 1242, Haydonwyk 1249. The addition is OE wīc ‘dairy farm’.

However the following has a different second element: Haydon Bridge Northum. Hayden 1236. ‘Valley where hay is made’. OE hēg + denu.
