Ebeneser, after the Welsh Nonconformist chapel here, from biblical
Eben-ezer, where the Israelites were defeated by the Philistines (1 Samuel 4:1). The present name was adopted in the early 20th cent. from the parish name
Llanddeiniolen (Welsh
llan, ‘church’).
