essential nutrient Those nutrients that are required by the body and cannot be synthesized in the body in adequate amounts to meet requirements, so must be provided by the diet: includes the essential amino acids and fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Really a tautology, since by definition nutrients are essential dietary constituents.
