cis‐ trans‐ isomerism In compounds such as unsaturated fatty acids, which have double bonds, the chain may continue on the same side of the double bond (cis‐) or the opposite side (trans‐). Most of the naturally‐occurring unsaturated fatty acids, and the desirable forms, have the cis‐configuration; trans‐unsaturated fatty acids are consided undesirable in the diet.
