bodegón Spanish term that was originally used to describe a low-class tavern and by the 1590s was applied to pictures featuring scenes of humble life in which food or drink play a part. Some
bodegones actually depict tavern interiors, but others are set in kitchens or unspecific surroundings.
Velázquez painted several
bodegones early in his career, and these are the most famous examples of the type.
Bodegones usually have a prominent still-life element, and in modern Spanish the term is used as a synonym for still life.
