Pompon, François (1855–1933). French sculptor. Much of his career was spent working as an assistant to other sculptors (including
Rodin) and recognition came to him late in life after his
Polar Bear (Pompidou Centre, Paris) was a great success at the 1922
Salon d'Automne. The work became enormously popular, reproduced in a variety of forms, and Pompon was hailed as the greatest animal sculptor since
Barye.
