Malouel, Jean (d. 1415). Netherlandish painter, the uncle of the
Limbourg brothers. From 1397 he was court painter to Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and his successor John the Fearless. No documented works by him survive, but he has been proposed as the author of several paintings, including a
tondo of the
Trinity in the Louvre, Paris. It has all the refinement of French court art combined with a strength of modelling and a realistic naturalism derived from Flanders. See also
