Agam, Yaacov ( Jacob Gipstein) (1928– ). Israeli sculptor and experimental artist, active mainly in Paris, where he settled in 1951. In 1955 he participated, with Bury, Calder, Tinguely, and other artists, in the exhibition ‘Le Mouvement’ at the Denise René Gallery, the exhibition that put Kinetic art on the map, and from this time he established a reputation as one of the most inventive figures working with the kinds of abstract art that lay stress on movement and spectator participation. Agam often uses light and sound effects in conjunction with his sculptures, and sometimes the components of his works can be rearranged by the spectator. He has had several major public commissions in France, among them the design of a square in the Défense quarter of Paris (1973).
