SYNCOPE [Stress: ‘SING-ko-py’]. A traditional term for
CONTRACTION in the middle of a word through the loss of a sound or letter, commonly marked (especially in verse) by an apostrophe:
ever reduced to
e'er,
even to
e'en,
taken to
ta'en. The process or act of making such a contraction is
syncopation.
