SUPERSTRATE. Also superstratum. A LANGUAGE or aspect of a language which affects another less prestigious or socially and culturally dominated language: for example, LATIN or FRENCH influencing Old and MIDDLE ENGLISH; English influencing many of the indigenous languages of Africa and Asia. Compare SUBSTRATE.
