JUTES. According to the chronicler Bede (
c.730), the name of a Germanic tribe which, with the Angles and Saxons, invaded Britain in the 5c and settled in Kent and part of the south coast, including the Isle of Wight. The Angles appear to have come from Schleswig and the Saxons from western Holstein and the north German coast from the Elbe westward. Since the Angles lived between the Saxons and the Jutes, the Jutes appear to have come from further north, probably the Jutland peninsula in Denmark, which may be named after them. See
