ENGLISHES. Varieties of ENGLISH collectively: ‘Discourse analysis, non-native Englishes and second language acquisition’ (title of a paper by Yamuna Kachru, in World Englishes 4: 2, 1985). The singular an English appears not (yet) to be common in the second sense, but comparable usage occur: ‘There must … be provision for each English to have a distinctive lexical set that will express local cultural content’ ( Gerry Abbott, ‘English across cultures’, English Today 28, Oct. 1991).
