ENG, also less formally tailed n, n with a tail. The symbol ŋ, used in IPA and the pronunciation systems of some dictionaries for the voiced velar NASAL consonant represented in English by the digraph ng as in sing /sɪŋ/. The form appears to date from the 17c, and was used by Isaac PITMAN in 1845 with this value in his phonotypic alphabet. See LETTER 1, SPEECH.
