LINGUISTICS, said of an
ACCENT or elements of an accent that are further along certain lines of change than others, to which the term
conservative is given. Some linguists dislike the term because it may be taken to mean that the form in question reflects social progress or importance, as for example in the phrase
advanced RP, a term used for the
RECEIVED PRONUNCIATION of some members of the upper class and royal family in Britain.
3. In language teaching and applied linguistics, said of a student whose competence in a foreign language has passed beyond the intermediate stage.
