OE. tellan = OS. tellian, (M)LG., (M)Du. tellen, OHG. zellen (G. zählen reckon, count), ON. telja :- Gmc. *taljan, f. *talō TALE.

Hence teller one who relates XIII; one who keeps tally XV; one selected to count votes XVII.
