suck draw liquid with the mouth OE.; in various fig. uses from XIV. OE. str. vb. sūcan (becoming weak from XIV), corr. to L. sūgere, (O)Ir. súgim, f. IE. *sug-, of which a parallel imit. base *suk- is repr. by OE. sūgan, OS., MLG., MDu. sūgen (Du. zuigen), OHG. sūgan (G. saugen), ON. súga.
Hence suck sb. XII. sucker young mammal before it is weaned XIV; shoot of a plant XVI; sucking organ, part, etc. XVII.
