salt substance (sodium chloride) prepared as a condiment OE.; (old chem.) solid non-inflammable substance having a taste XIV; (mod. chem.) compound formed by an acid with a basic radical XVIII. OE. s(e)alt = OS. salt (Du. zout), (O)HG. salz, ON., Goth. salt :- Gmc. *saltam, sb. use of adj. *saltaz (see below), extension of IE. *sal-, repr. by L. sāl, sal-, Gr. háls, OSl. salī, Latv. sāls, OIr. salann.
So salt adj. OE. s(e)alt. salt vb. OE. s(e)altan. Hence salty (-Y1) XV.
