never OE. nǣfre, f. ne + ǣfre; see NO3, EVER. The contr. form ner(e), with indef. art. nere a, neʾer a, became (dial.) narrow a, narra, (esp. U.S.) nary.
Hence nevertheless XIII; repl. earlier notheless, natheless OE. nā pȳ lǣs, f. , NO1 + instr. case of THE + LESS.
