-most suffix forming superl. adjs. and advs.; alt. form of OE. -mest = Goth. -umists, which is a combination of two Gmc. (and IE.) superl. suffixes, viz. *-mo-, as in OE. forma first, L. prīmus first (PRIME), and *-isto- -EST. Cf. -MORE.
