furnish †accomplish; supply, provide XV. — OF. furniss-, lengthened stem (see -ISH2) of furnir (mod. fournir) :- Rom. *fornīre, alt. of *formīre, *fromīre — Gmc. *frumjan (OS. frummian, OHG. frummen) promote, accomplish, supply.
So furniture †action of furnishing; provision, equipment (with various applications); the sense ‘movable articles in a room, etc.’ is peculiarly Eng. XVI. — F. fourniture (OF. forneture).
