dabchick XVI. The early forms dap-, dop-chick, and (later) dipchick suggest connection with OE. dufe doppa ‘pelicanus’. ME. doue/doppe, dyve dap (later divedopper, -dapper), OE. dop ened, dop/fugol moorhen, and hence with the base *deup- *dup- (see DEEP, DIP).
