Earliest forms arsmetrik(e), -metike — OF. arismetique — Rom. *arismetica, for L. arithmētica — Gr. arithmētikḗ (sc. tékhnē art) ‘art of counting’, f. arithmeîn, f. arithmós number; assoc. with L. ars metrica ‘measuring art’ led to forms of the type arsmetrik(e) which were later (XV) conformed to the orig. L. and Gr.
