parliament from the 1690s, the position of speaker of the House of Commons became an important political office. Elected by MPs in a procedure which government could influence but not control, the speaker was not a neutral chairman but a figure of power in his own right, the principal intermediary between the legislature and the executive. Important holders of the office during the 18th century included Alan
Brodrick, Henry
Boyle, John
Ponsonby, and John
Foster.
