senchléithe

senchléithe, a term meaning ‘ancient dwelling’ applied to a servile tenant whose forebears of fuidir or bothach rank have occupied the same land for three generations. Unlike the fuidir or bothach, he is bound to his lord and cannot renounce his tenancy. If the land he occupies is acquired by a new owner, he and his family go with it. He is nonetheless distinguished from the slave, who is the property of his owner and has no legal rights.
