patent and close rolls

patent and close rolls contained the letters patent and letters close issued by chancery. The former include land grants, corporate charters, peace treaties, king's letters, and deeds. The latter consist mainly of authorizations for making exchequer payments, although earlier rolls contain a variety of other orders and instructions. The original rolls were destroyed in 1922. Calendars for the reigns of Henry II to Henry VII, and for James I, were printed by the Irish record commissioners; calendars for the reigns of Henry VIII to Elizabeth and part of Charles I were published by James Morrin in 1861–3. Additional material is available in manuscript calendars and in John Lodge's records of the rolls, both in the National Archives (see Public Records).
